Self imploding bike…
Bobby Lea and I had made it to the Madison final, only to have a Self Imploding bike destroy our possibilities in the closing laps of the race. Bobby and I had been racing like rock stars for our first ever Madison together. We were actually in 5th place with just 50 laps to go when my bike started to make so horrendous sound, that only became worse with each passing lap. So I fly into the pits, our mechanic and I tighten a few things, send me back out, but now the sound is creak is worse! So head back down to the pits tighten the chain ring bolts, fixed, yes fixed but it totally blew my teammate out the pack because he had to take about 5 or 8 extra laps too long. In the Madison each rider does about 35 seconds worth of near max effort, then he throws partner in and he does the same. If the rider not racing rolls to fast on recovery then he screws his partner, because his partner has to do 45 seconds or even up to 1min worth of effort because his teammate rolled to fast on his recovery. Well when I went down in to the pits…twice…to get my bike fixed, Bobby had to do WAY too many laps without any relief. Ya that totally blew Bobby, then totally blew me too as we both attempted to make up our lost ground. If we had not had our…my mechanical and only stayed in the pack, not even getting another point in the rest of the race, we would have been tied for 5th or 6th. Ya that was a hard one to swallow.
Oh ya, Madison is the hardest set of VO2 intervals one will ever EVER attempt to do in his or her (Kate Compton) life.

To get a “spot” wise, it was rough to swallow, but what can you do when you have a mech trouble….?
F-1/NASCAR/any GPs…. we can’t win unless we cross the line. If you run out the gas, blow tires, crashes, etc. etc. on the last lap…. It’s same on your bike, right?
At least, you were able to notice the problem BEFORE anything happened, which may have caused many drome thorns sticking your butt as your souvenir from Manchester “besides” your shiny Cu neckless!!
Anyway, that must have been a HELL of great interval Tr!!!!

You can’t do anything about mechanical problems! That’s the bike, not the great rider!! That’s tough though. I’m still proud of our home town boy!!
