Colby Peace won the Pan Am Championships Madison….oh and with a little help from me.  We entered the race knoing that it was going to be so insane, dangerous, and at times very one sided with nearly every other country besides Canada against USA.  I suffered like Doug Greek at a snow cone stand that just ran out of pina colada and fruit punch, but Colby Pearce was riding head and shoulders above everyone and he helped to seal the deal for us.  I felt really honored to race witth Colby as he is one of the best track rider US has had in the past few years.  If you do not believe me, then you attempt to follow a few of his moves and you will no the wrath of “Hip Hop”.
Coming home with 2 Pan American Championships Jerseys is quite an honor (Omnium and Madison).  I really think that it has been quite a while since and American has won Gold in an Endurance event on the track?

IMG_2221.JPG
ya it is this crazy most every day and yes buses and cars really have the sweet top/bottom tint on their front windows.
IMG_2235.JPG
we have had police escorts pretty much every day to combat the insane traffic around here.
IMG_2246.JPG
Jenny Reed got this amazing fire works display for here podium appearance…we think somebody set them off a little too soon as there was still a few races to go.
IMG_2250.JPG
It all came down to tenths of a second for the kilo win to take the overall, so the team collectively made me control the mullet. Still not gay though.

Omnium still kicks my ass

Too much gatorade

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

I drank so much gatorade the first day of competition that my fillings hurt.  Ya that is right my fillings hurt from so much sugar water, gu, clif blocks, and 1 banana.  Racing in the Omnium on is not able to really sit down and have a quality meal, so simple sugars pretty much most of the way in each session of competition…morning session then evening session.  I think that I single handedly used up all the reserve clif shots the USA team brought down to Venezuela.
Racing down in South American in the stars and bars I am now able to fully understand just how much of a bulls eye is on our back….not just in the races, but also in the streets.  We have not been able to do any type of a road ride due to the fact that it is just to dangerous and we have no guide just yet.  One cool thing is that we have police Motorcycle escorts to and from the velodrome.  These guys fear nothing, they will just take every hot route know to man then stop on a dime in front of a 1960´s bus packed to the brim with people and make it stop.  It is pretty amazing.
As for racing….the Omnium well it all came down to the Kilo.  Up til this point the Venezuelan, Columbian (who was not even breathing as he double lapped us in the points race???), Dominican Republic, and an old friend from Chile were all up for the podium spots along with me.  But in the end I was some how able to overcome the little Columbian who was riding insanely fast for a guy that is about 135lbs.  So guess what….I the Pan American/Continental Champion in the Omnium!!!!!!  Pretty crazy huh.
It was not cake walk I will ensure you, I had to work as hard or harder than I did at worlds.

Track Track Track again…

Off to Valencia, Venezuela for Continental Championships to start the long hunt for UCI points to make the Olympic team….ya I said Olympic team. Crazy huh? Hopefully this trip is a great success and not just another would’a, could’a, should’a for Huff.

few degrees of goodness!

Ever since mounting my track bike I knew that it was just a tad off. Mainly the fact that it was made with the thought of Team Pursuit being it’s main use…well the Team Pursuit has only been a small portion of my track bikes use. Lets see: Scratch races, Omnium, Points Race, Madison just to name a few. These races usually require an individual to be in the drops for the full distance of the races because it is game on from the gun. Well my ride has such a big drop that I have never been able to fully get my bars high enough, which in turn limited my ability to maintain my position in the drops because I could no longer feel my mid-section. This was not a one time deal, I distinctly remember just about ever World Cup, my last 2 Worlds, Nationals, and every local race this would happen…sweet huh! Just take a look at the Velonews article on me and you will see me in full on conservation mode with my hands on the tops of my bars in the middle of the LA World Cup. This is not the fondest thing for other riders or the USA Cycling coaches to see as they are all freaking out that I will not be able to handle my bike as well, lets just say I am not worried about handling my bike at this point. Luckily I found a stem with just a few more degrees of rise and let me just say that I am in heaven!
Anybody who has ridden with me will know that I am not ashamed to flip my stem to get the right position, even if I have a rec rider/MS 150 look to it, I don’t care. It is quite difficult to really apply power when you can’t feel your pelvis region. Maybe this new stem will be my godsend?
Track Track Track….you know it!

MMMmmmm…
