sitting the bench sucked in High School and it still sucks now.
I really hope that I will be able to get back in the starting line up soon…ie get my knee 100% so I can even race.
What does sitting the bench really do? Well it can make some athletes get fully fed up with some piece of shit coach that feels that he is doing something better for his team by having your ass on the bench, but really he is just making his team worse by not allowing his TEAM to grow and benefit from experience that will build their character as an athlete/s and human being/s. I will say that I was lucky to not have to totally sit the bench my whole career, but those times that I was pulling the splinters out of my ass really helped me to understand that I was going to limit this from happening again. Even if some of my past coaches…coach!…thought I was only going through the motions, I think I do not even have to explain myself to make them think otherwise.
A lot of the times it is the bench warms that continue past those SUPER STARS that were the biggest and greatest thing since Doug Greek could actually see his feet past his old belly? When one is used to being the star it is hard to continue in life when he or she is not always the star, what happens when they are overcome with LIFE’S road blocks….each little and big one? It just does not seem to always come as easy at it used to huh? Well it is then that the true worth of an individual is known?
So I will just sit here and carve my name in this bench as I attempt to figure out the world through these fogged over glasses from always seeming to be warming up for the big show, but something just brings me right back to square one….the bench.
In fact some of my best times have been on the bench….I remember make little heart signs to a certain girl named Megan back in High School or thinking up the next crazy thing I might do if I get in to the game….like the Hacksaw Jim Dougans battle Cry “HOOOOOOOO” as I hold up my imaginary 2by4 or how in the hell I am going to stay warm because it is damn cold on this sideline…oh oh I know, I will play a joke on my friend Josh and crouch behind him as somebody pushes him backwards so he falls over(after thought…bad idea…nearly cracked Josh’s elbow)?
Sitting the Bench helps an athlete understand why he/she continues to warm up and practice day after day….because he/she loves it!
